3.2 Moses, There Must Be a Man

Verse: Exodus 3:10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt. Exodus 3:7-12

Adam was originally commissioned to rule and reign 

on the earth.

Genesis 1:28-29

And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and

subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and

over every living thing that moves on the earth." ESV

Genesis 2:15

And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and guard and keep

it. AMP

Mankind was created in the image and likeness of God to “guard and keep”. These simple-sounding

words carry significant meaning for us. “Guard” is also translated as “cultivate” which carries the

meanings: “to put through a finishing process”, “to foster growth of”, and “to further or encourage”.

The word “keep” means “guard”, “preserve”, “be faithful to”, and “maintain”. From these words we can

see that man was intended to exercise authority and bring the will of God to fruition on the earth.

We see this pattern in Moses’ life:

Exodus 3:7-11

Then the Lord said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have

heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to

deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good

and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the

Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And now, behold, the cry

of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the

Egyptians oppress them. Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the

children of Israel, out of Egypt." ESV

In this Scripture YHWH identifies these actions as His own, “I have seen the affliction”, “I know their

sufferings”,” I have come down to deliver them… and bring them up”, “The cry of the people has come

to me”, and “I have seen the oppression”.

But it is Moses, the man who is sent to Pharaoh to actually perform the desires of YHWH, that is “to

guard and to keep”.

As Moses begins to argue with YHWH that he is too weak, slow of speech, and not qualified to

accomplish the task, YHWH challenges Moses:

Exodus 4:2-3

The Lord said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A staff." And he said, "Throw it on

the ground." ESV

The staff of Moses wrought many signs and wonders before Pharaoh as YHWH methodically confronted

and destroyed every deity in Egypt. The staff in Moses’ hand parted the Red Sea and broke open the

rock in the wilderness that brought water to all of Israel. A man’s staff represents his name, character,

and authority. The staff of a shepherd in Midian carries a rather limited authority, but the staff of a

shepherd commissioned by the Lord holds earth-shaking authority. Moses already possessed the

qualifications to carry out the deliverance of Israel; the staff was already in his hand. The power came

through it as YHWH instructed him. This is delegated authority and Moses’ life history brought him to

the place where he was uniquely qualified to exercise YHWH’s purpose.

Proverbs 19:21

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. ESV

God reminds Paul with his “thorn in the flesh”:

2 Corinthians 12:9

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. ESV

Ekklesia - our destination, God’s ruling authority.

Matthew 16:13-19

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Whom

do men say that I the Son of man am? ”

And they said, “Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or

one of the prophets.”

He saith unto them, “But whom say ye that I am?”

And Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. ”

And Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood

hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”

And I say also unto thee, “That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church

(ekklesia); and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind

on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in

heaven ”. KJV

The word “ekklesia” in the Greek occurs 114 times in the New Testament and it always translated into

English as the “church”. An ekklesia was the name for a local or regional governing authority in the

Greek society. What Jesus is telling Peter in this passage concerns the revelation he received concerning

Jesus’ identity. The “rock” upon which Jesus was building His church was the revelation of Jesus as

Messiah, the Son of God, who had already appeared in the flesh. Jesus was telling Peter that everyone

with that revelation of Jesus as Messiah would be the foundation for the Messiah’s ruling, governing

authority on the earth.

We are not only redeemed and saved from death, we are actually restored to Adam’s original

commission to rule and subdue the earth. God’s church (ekklesia) is His governing authority. God does

not violate His commissions, because the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable (Romans 11:29).

Living Stones

1 Peter 2:5

[Come] and, like living stones, be yourselves built [into] a spiritual house, for a holy

(dedicated, consecrated) priesthood, to offer up [those] spiritual sacrifices [that are]

acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. AMP

God always chooses a man as His covenant representative; Jesus humbled Himself as a man and became

sin for us. This is the fulfillment of the ages, Christ in us, the hope of glory

2 Corinthians 5:20-6:3

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you

on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no

sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Working together with him,

then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, "In a favorable

time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you."

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. ESV
