Verse: Mark3:4 and he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.

The Hebrew word for “Sabbath” literally means “to cease”. Jesus’ healings demonstrated in the following verses illustrate that the central theme of the Sabbath is to cease from our labor and rest in Him. Everything God has for us is good and for our good. “That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it [set it apart for His purposes]” (Exodus 20:11). AMP
God’s purposes are clearly revealed in these multiple healings. None of these miracles can be
accomplished by our merit or labor, Jesus demonstrated that they only come as we rest in Him and
these Sabbath encounters are proof that He is God.
John 5:2-10--The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five
roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One
man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there
and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be
healed?" 7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the
water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him,
"Get up, take up your bed, and walk." 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his
bed and walked.
Now that day was the Sabbath. ESV
Matt 12:9-21 (also Luke 6:6-11) - A Man with a Withered Hand
9 He went on from there and entered their synagogue. 10 And a man was there with a withered
hand. And they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"— so that they might accuse
him. 11 He said to them, "Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath,
will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is
lawful to do good on the Sabbath." 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And
the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went
out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.
God's Chosen Servant
15 Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all
16 and ordered them not to make him known. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the
prophet Isaiah:
18 "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I
will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.19 He will not quarrel or
cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; 20 a bruised reed he will not break, and a
smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; 21 and in his name the
Gentiles will hope." ESV
Mark 1:21-34 - Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue
and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who
had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man
with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God." 25 But Jesus
rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing
him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that
they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He
commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28 And at once his fame spread
everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many
29 And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with
James and John. 30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told
him about her. 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left
her, and she began to serve them.
32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33
And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick
with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to
speak, because they knew him. ESV
A Woman with a Disabling Spirit - Luke 13:10-17
10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman
who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully
straighten herself. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, "Woman, you are
freed from your disability." 13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made
straight, and she glorified God. 14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had
healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days in which work ought to be done.
Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day." 15 Then the Lord answered
him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the
manger and lead it away to water it? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham
whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?" 17 As he
said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at all the
glorious things that were done by him. ESV
