10.3 Any Time is Right for You

Verse: John 7:6-9 "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here…. You go up to the feast. I

am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come." ESV

John chapter 7 reveals a pattern for the fulfillment of the Feast of Tabernacles. Certainly there will

come a day when the Lord Jesus Christ comes and establishes His throne on earth and it will be a day

like no other when Israel is gathered together and reconciled to their Messiah, Jesus.

Ezekiel 37:26-28

I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I

will set them in their land[and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst

forevermore. My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my

people. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary

is in their midst forevermore.” ESV

But the pattern I see in John 7 is not so much about the ultimate fulfillment of the feast as it is about the

method and strategy used by the Lord to reveal Himself to individuals and to the nations.

The beginning of the feast.

John 7:8-13

You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come."

After saying this, he remained in Galilee. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he

also went up, not publicly but in private. The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and

saying, "Where is he?" And there was much muttering about him among the people. While

some said, "He is a good man," others said, "No, he is leading the people astray." Yet for fear of

the Jews no one spoke openly of him. ESV

At the beginning of the feast, He tells His doubting brothers that He is not going to the feast, but He

goes up privately. Jesus always begins to speak to us in the very private place of our heart. He does not

rush in and demand we make Him a King, but He comes to meet our need and initiate the restoration and healing we need.

Jesus does not make Himself known to the doubters. He has no need to argue His way into acceptance.

Jesus comes to heal the broken hearted (Psalm 147:3), heal the sick, and destroy all the work of the

enemy. All these things and more He does to demonstrate that He is the Messiah (See John 14:11).

Often at this stage of relationship, arguments are stirred up as to whether this is really Jesus doing these things or someone else.

The middle of the feast.

John 7:14-17

About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. The Jews

therefore marveled, saying, "How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?"

So Jesus answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone's will is to

do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my

own authority. ESV

Can This Be the Christ?

John 7:25-27

Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?

And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities

really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the

Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from." ESV

In the middle of the feast, Jesus is standing on Solomon’s Porch where many of the rabbis of the day

taught and spoke publicly and argued concerning the proper interpretation of Torah. The best

“theologians” of the day were there, and He was speaking openly with them. They were even impressed

with His knowledge of the Torah!

After so much study of Torah it is hard to believe that they could not see the Torah made flesh that was

standing before them (John 1:14). This sort of thing can happen to us as individuals as well. We can

come to the place where Jesus is teaching us out in the open. It may be in a Bible study, a church setting,

or something of a similar nature. Still there may remain some doubt in us that Jesus is King, the Lord. His

teachings can be compared to other “teachers”. We can listen to His public teaching without becoming

His disciple. Maybe we want to mix in some Eastern mysticism, or “nature worship”, or “good

thoughts/feel good philosophy”. The point is that we can be listening to Jesus’ teachings in the public

square without recognizing who He actually is.

Again the result was arguments--debates about who Jesus is and who He is not.

The conclusion of the feast.

Rivers of living water.

John 7:37-44

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let

him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his

heart will flow rivers of living water.'" 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who

believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not

yet glorified.

Division among the people.

When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This really is the Prophet." Others

said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the

Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem,

the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of

them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. ESV

On the last day of the week-long feast Jesus interrupted the long-standing water ceremony to publicly

declare to the whole nation of Israel that He was the Messiah which the water ceremony pointed to. He

could not have chosen a more appropriate day or moment to declare who He was. Yet even then there

were only arguments about who He was.

Any time is right for you.

There will surely come a time and a day in history when Jesus establishes His rule as King over the whole

earth. Things that have been since the fall will be completely transformed. It will be a time that we can

barely even imagine, yet we can step into this time right now as individuals.

My time has not yet come, but your time is always here….

The feast is an eternal event that will be manifested in time at some calendar date just the same as

Passover and Pentecost. Jesus has given the sacrifice for sin, the sin of the whole world forever. When

we appropriate and accept His provision we can stand accusation-free before the LORD, but this is not

the end of our journey, it is the beginning. The “gift of the Father” is the indwelling Holy Spirit, the very

Spirit of God, who teaches us how to live in fellowship with the LORD.

This is the “Living Water” that Jesus promised during the feast. This gift was given at Pentecost and is

available to everyone who believes. Without the instructions and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, we can

never grow up into maturity. We have need of instructions and practice and God gives abundantly for

our good and for the purpose of our maturing to become sons of full stature in His Kingdom.

We can begin this anytime!

We can walk all the way into maturity anytime. Anytime is right for us. Even as we wait and anticipate

the fullness of the manifestation of the Great Feast, we can enter into that realm where Jesus is Lord

and we are being transformed into His disciples. A disciple becomes just like his teacher in every aspect.

This is entirely possible! We can be led of the Spirit and be successful in that. It is not required that the

enemy or the flesh must always come in and destroy the works of the Spirit. Quite the contrary, Jesus

came to destroy the works of the enemy so we can walk in the Spirit. Who do you expect to win? Who

do you think has the greater authority?

Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of

the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And

behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." ESV

This commission is for right now--today! It is real and just as Jesus stated during the feast, “anytime is

right for you”!
