2.5 He Is Our Peace

Verse: Ephesians 2:14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:11-22; Isaiah 9:6-7

Let us remember that Sabbath is a “sign” both to point us to the actual destination and a “sign” that

marks us to those who are “strangers and aliens” to the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). The sign is

not the substance, but correct signage will direct us accurately to our goal.

What is that goal? It is nothing less than Jesus Christ.

Colossians 1:15-23 (from The Message)

15 We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God's original

purpose in everything created. 16 For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and

invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels — everything got started in him and finds its purpose in

him. 17 He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this

moment. 18 And when it comes to the church, he organizes and holds it together, like a head does a

body.

He was supreme in the beginning and — leading the resurrection parade — he is supreme in the end.

From beginning to end he's there, towering far above everything, everyone. 19 So spacious is he, so

roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. 20 Not only that, but all

the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe — people and things, animals and atoms — get

properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured

down from the Cross.

21 You yourselves are a case study of what he does. At one time you all had your backs turned to God,

thinking rebellious thoughts of him, giving him trouble every chance you got. 22 But now, by giving

himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God's side and put

your lives together, whole and holy in his presence. 23 You don't walk away from a gift like that! You

stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly tuned in to the Message, careful not to be

distracted or diverted. There is no other Message — just this one. Every creature under heaven gets this

same Message. I, Paul, am a messenger of this Message.

The letter Paul wrote to the Colossians while he was in prison brought correction to the mixture, false

teachings, and arguments that were beginning to plague the young believers in Colossae. Some of the

problems were as follows:

1. Some heretics did not consider Jesus to be fully divine (1:15-20)

2. The Colossians built philosophies not built on Christ (2:8)

3. They had begun to teach a legalistic following of circumcision, dietary laws, and festival laws

(2:8,11,16,21; 3:11)

4. The worship of angels and lesser spirits was encouraged (2:8,18)

5. Deprivation of one’s “evil” fleshly body was promoted (Asceticism) (2:20-23)

6. False teachers claimed to have special insights and “revelations” (2:18-19)

In the middle of these rebukes Paul states:

Colossians 2:16-17

Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or

a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to

Christ. ESV

Colossians 3:1-4

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the

right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you

have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you

also will appear with him in glory. ESV
