7.2 Ten Days of Awe

Verse: Isaiah 55:6 "Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; ESV

The Ten Days of Awe, also referred to as The Ten Days of Teshuva (Repentance), are the ten days

between The Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). In Jewish

tradition they are a solemn season of introspection and repentance preceding the most solemn of the

feast days, Yom Kippur.

It is during these ten days that people are to seek reconciliation and restitution against those they have

offended or injured and repent of their sins. It is presumed that during this season, the books of life and

death are opened and people can change their records from death to life. At Yom Kippur, the books are

closed and their fate sealed for another year. During this period, it is customary to greet one another

with the phrase, "L'Shanah Tovah Tikateyvu" meaning, "May you be inscribed in the book of life." All this

is from Jewish tradition that started after Babylonian captivity and were solidified by Maimonides (1134-1204).

While all of these traditions can be well meaning, they are contrary to the truth of Torah and the pattern of redemption in Messiah Jesus.

Galatians 3:9-14

So those now who live by faith are blessed along with Abraham, who lived by faith — this is no

new doctrine! 10 And that means that anyone who tries to live by his own effort, independent

of God, is doomed to failure. Scripture backs this up: "Utterly cursed is every person who fails to

carry out every detail written in the Book of the law."

The obvious impossibility of carrying out such a moral program should make it plain that no one

can sustain a relationship with God that way. The person who lives in right relationship with God

does it by embracing what God arranges for him. Doing things for God is the opposite of

entering into what God does for you. Habakkuk had it right: "The person who believes God, is

set right by God — and that's the real life." 12 Rule-keeping does not naturally evolve into living

by faith, but only perpetuates itself in more and more rule-keeping, a fact observed in Scripture:

"The one who does these things [rule-keeping] continues to live by them."

Christ redeemed us from that self-defeating, cursed life by absorbing it completely into himself.

Do you remember the Scripture that says, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"? That is

what happened when Jesus was nailed to the Cross: He became a curse, and at the same time

dissolved the curse. 14 And now, because of that, the air is cleared and we can see that

Abraham's blessing is present and available for non-Jews, too. We are all able to receive God's

life, his Spirit, in and with us by believing — just the way Abraham received it. (THE MESSAGE)

It is always a good idea to live in a place of humility and be willing to truly repent (turn from) sin and

seek reconciliation with others, but this is not the basis for our right standing before God. It is the

covenant ratified between Jesus, the Son, and the Father that gives us access to the forgiveness of sin

and right standing with God.

Right living does not get our names written in the book of life, rather our agreement and surrender to

the righteousness of God through Jesus gets our names written in the book of life and that in turn

produces right living and right relationships with others. This can only be done as we abide in Him. In

this sense, the tradition of the Ten Days of Awe can serve as a reminder that we need to remain vigilant

and ready to reconcile towards YHWH and others as we live day to day.

1 John 2:28-3:3

And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and

not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be

sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

3 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and

so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved,

we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when

he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus

hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. ESV

John 15:4-8

"Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can't bear

grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can't bear fruit unless you are joined

with me.

5 "I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you're joined with me and I with you, the relation

intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can't produce a thing. 6

Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. 7 But if

you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that

whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. 8 This is how my Father shows who he is —

when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples. (from THE MESSAGE)

The Feast of Trumpets is characterized by a day to make noise and sound an alarm. It is indeed a wake-

up call, a call to assemble, and a call to muster in preparation for upcoming events.

Numbers 29:1-2

On the first day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any

ordinary work. It is a day for you to blow the trumpets, ESV

When we are delivered from the power of bondage (sin) into the liberty of the kingdom of God we are

fully clothed with righteousness from on high. We cannot become any cleaner or achieve any purer

standing before YHWH than what we do at Passover (initial salvation experience). But as we grow in

Christ through various trials and experiences, we can fall prey to the “sin that so easily ensnares us”

(Hebrews 12:1) and become separated from that intimate fellowship that we require day to day and

moment to moment. Yom Teruah also serves as a warning and wake-up call to repentance. It is also a

joyful sound because we are not being called to a judgment of condemnation but a judgment that leads

to repentance and Life.

1 John 1:9-10

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ESV

1 Peter 5:8-11

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion,

seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of

suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you

have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ,

will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and

ever. Amen. ESV

The feast day that comes after Yom Teruah is the Day of Atonement or Judgment; it is the great and

terrible Day of the Lord which holds the judgment for the sins of the nation. But here is the conclusion of

that day. On the Day of Atonement, when the high priest comes out and the scapegoat is released to a

“place not inhabited”, the judgment of the Lord declares, “Your sins are forgiven and I will remember

them no more.”

This is God’s work and the redemption of the people, the nations and Israel. Full and complete. The Ten

Days of Awe are a reminder for us to respond to the admonishments of the Lord and our fellow

believers as we seek to keep abiding in Christ and reach our full stature in Him.
