Verse: Leviticus 23:24 In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of
solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets, a holy convocation. ESV
What does the Teruah do?
The conscious and the subconscious mind can be compared to an iceberg. The conscious mind is the
small portion that appears above the water, but the greater portion is hidden under the water--the
subconscious mind. We have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:14-16) yet we are not aware of it most
of the time and we do not avail ourselves of it. The Teruah penetrates deep within us and awakens the
depth and power of the mind of Christ that we have been given as citizens of the kingdom of God. The
Teruah pulls the hidden things into the open and YHWH is displayed in awesome and powerful ways.
There will indeed be a day when Yom Teruah is entirely fulfilled, but until that year comes we can learn
about the nature of that day from biblical history.
The conquests of Jericho and Jehoshaphat give examples to us of the importance of the Teruah – the
awakening blast
Jericho – When the people SHOUTED (Teruah) the defeat of the stronghold of the city of Jericho was complete.
Joshua 6:15-16
And it came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and
compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city
seven times. And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets,
Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the Lord hath given you the city. KJV
We have seen many examples of inspiring musical expression throughout the pages of the Bible
and throughout the histories of this world. When the children of Israel marched around Jericho
seven days the trumpets were sounding victory ahead of the event. On the seventh day the
Israelites gave a mighty shout, (and the Hebrew word for shout here is Teruah), and the walls came tumbling down
King Jehoshaphat 2 Chronicles 20
When the armies of Moab, Ammon, and Edom came against Judah King Jehoshaphat called the nation
and Himself to come and assemble before God. The Word of God came forth with instructions to send
singers at the head of the army to declare the praises of God and His victory. The word was to stand
still and see the salvation of God. God said that He would fight this battle for them. And He did. Judah’s
enemies ended up killing each other.
2 Chronicles 20:20-23
So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went
out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe
in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper."
And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord,
and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:
"Praise the Lord,
For His mercy endures forever."
Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. For the
people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and
destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to
destroy one another. NKJV
2 Chron 20:28-30
So they came to Jerusalem, with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets, to the house of
the Lord. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard
that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was
quiet, for his God gave him rest all around. NKJV
Psalm 47:5-9
God is gone up with a shout (Teruah), the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.
The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for
the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted. KJV
